RE: Parking on the street to live.

I know we stayed in California for a few months, and did this Stealth Camping almost every night. I didnt know there was a name for it, but at least I now know what we're doing...LOL I know around the San Diego area, we ran into a bunch of other RVer's who would give us tips and secrets of the streets and areas where the police dont bother you. That was as long as you were gone the next day, no setting up camp and BBQing on the street. For us, it worked great. Like when we stay in a Wally World lot, all we're doing is sleeping for the night, so I dont care if I'm on some side street, or in a parking lot. I do know that we've only soent around $100 in camping fees so far this year, so I aint complaining. Pat

RE: Battery education here

Have you looked into the small solar panels that mount on the deck of the boat to give the battery a charge while the suns out? Might be an option, and it's quiet..LOL

RE: Cross country trip with Kids - TT vs. Class C

I'd probably go with a TT strictly for the reasons that the other poster stated. You cant do too much moving around inside the Class C while you're driving. Once you stop somewhere, unless you have a towed, you're going to have to bring your house with you if you have to run to get supplies. Something tells me with 5 kids (God Bless You Both) that trips to get supplies and other items will be something that will need to be done at each camp. 5 to 6 hours per day is alot of driving for any adult, let alone 5 kids. My wife and I travel full time, and 5 hours a day is our max, unless we have to be somewhere and cant help it. Anything over that amount of time makes you tired, grumpy, sore and the kids will probably go insane. This wouldnt be bad if say it was just 5 to 6 hours for one or two days, then they were at their destination and could get out and enjoy, but to go 5 to 6 hours per day for 7 days so not going to be fun for anyone. Think vacation from hell rather than great memories which I'm sure you're trying to make. I'd do some serious route planning and have stops that can be camped at each day that will allow you all to get out, do some hiking or something that will stretch the legs and plan a little longer adventure. I know this didnt sway you one way or the other for Class C or TT, but if I was taking the family, I'd probably choose a TT just for the fact that you can drop it off in a campground and do side trips. Our side trips are the bread and butter of our travels, and we've had many fellow RVers jump in with us because they were in a Class C and didnt have a tow vehicle. This meant they were stuck in the camp ground and could only do things that were within walking, biking distance. Have fun Pat

RE: New to Boondocking

My wife and I fulltime and 90% of our camping is drycamping or Boondocking We average 10 days before we need to find a dumpstation. It is almost always only for the gray tank or because we are out of water. We also carry a larger water tank in the bed of our truck if we know we're going to be out for longer periods or away from a town for too long. Like the others have said, we know to conserve just like during our backpacking days. Military showers, reusing the handwashing water to put in the toilet, wet-wipes for many of the washing to conserve water...etc After a few times out, you'll be amazed at how comfortable it is. We enver go through the hassle of freeze drying any of our foods. That just seems like a whole lotta work and isnt the idea to go out and have fun? Pat

RE: Best way to lock cupboard doors?

If the handles are near each other, we bought some velcro strapping and just attach the velcro between the handles. When we stop, we just take the velcro off and store it in the cabinet

RE: Out west trip

We basically just did this exact trip when we were in Yellowstone and got a call that we needed to be home for some family matters. Home is Lower Michigan. I agree with everything Skip said. And plan on spending at least 4-5 days in Yellowstone when there. We actually liked Grand Teton's more, but only because while we were there, the wildflowers were going crazy and the park isnt as designated as Yellowstone is, so you can be out on trails and never see another human. http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q190/Bonishphoto/CindyinaLupineField.jpg width=500 Coming across South Dakota, there is a little 1880's town where they filmed Dances With Wolves, that is a cool place to stop if you're into the wild west days. Granted it's just a movie set, but it's an entire town that was left after they filmed the movie. Sort of a cool way to break up the monotony of driving through that state anyway. We were amazed that everything you're gonna see in that state is right in the lower Western Corner. Crazy Horse was waaaayyy better than Rushmore, even though it isnt close to being finished and knowing it was a private family who owns it made me feel better about my entrance fee. If you plan on stopping at a bunch of the National Parks, save some money and buy the annual pass. For us, we're under the Golden Passport age, so it was $80, but we paid it off in just a few parks as each one is a $20 entrance fee. http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q190/Bonishphoto/BlackBearlurkingintheferns.jpg width=500 Feel free to check out our June Blog for when my wife and I passed through all these areas. You'll enjoy some of the most beautiful places in our country, and probably have some great weather during your trip. When we were just in Yellowstone, there was still 10 feet of snow on some of the passes!! But it was melting fast due to the warmer temperatures. http://i136.photobucket.com/albums/q190/Bonishphoto/ElkCrossing.jpg width=500 Oh, and watch out for animals on the roads! That's a Jeep Cherokee behind that herd of Elk crossing the road in late afternoon! Make sure to bring plenty of memory cards for the photos, and we found it's always cool to bring something to keep a trip journal. You're gonna see so much in such a short time, by the time you'll get home, you'll have forgotten alot of it...LOL Have Fun! Pat

RE: Trip Report: 2006 Honda Odyssey w/Jayco 17C

As long as you're going to keep the trips to around 100 miles, I dont see any harm in towing with the Odyessy. Just watch how much you pack into the camper. You'll be alarmed at how fast you can exceed the weight limits with just a few items to make the camping a bit more comfortable. Since your van didnt come with a transmission cooler as a stock item, I'd have one installed for sure. It will really help in the longevity of your vehicle. Main thing is to have fun!

RE: Water filtration

Once we sanitize the fresh water tank with the Thetford Sanitizer, we see noe problem with drinking from the taps? This not only saves in platic bottle waste, but saves in weight compared to hauling extra water when we are already hauling a full fresh tank. We always filter our water before we put it in the fresh tank, so we really dont see any problems in drinking from it.

RE: Chevy Hybrid Pickup ??

I know they were advertising a Flex-Fuel model, which ment it could be fueled from either regular gasoline or Ethanol. We did a story on those models, but the problem is, so few stations have ethanol, they arent available everywhere yet. I have heard a few rumors that the line-up should be hitting the market pretty soon, as it's a 2009 model scheduled to be released, and most do so in June of the previous year. But so far, only the Tahoe is out on the market for consumers. I'd be very interested to see what this would do towing a TT. Especially some of the lighter weight models on the market. Pat

RE: correct venting for inside AGM bank?

Arent AGM's sealed batteries that are ventless? I'm only saying this as most advertise that they can be mounted at any angle even upside down as they're completely sealed?

RE: Going South of the Border

Trip, there is a war going on along the border. If you've ever seen the border towns, NO ONE wants to be camping, rving or even be in or around these towns. My wife and I spent two months down there last winter, and even the local Mexicans we became very good friends with told us they dont go near the Border Towns. It's called the Mad Dash. You leave early in the morning, drive straight through for a few hundred miles and get through the hassle of the border as quickly as possible. Once you're past that, it's home free and as beautiful as you could imagine. Check out THIS LINK for tons of info on our trip Pat

RE: Extended exhaust pipe for Honda 3000?

I will be watching this one, because I too was interested in having a welder attach a piece of metal to my exhaust so I could throw a standard extension on and get the exhaust up and over the camper

RE: Solar Shower Stand

I'd throw the solar shower on the roof of the camper, then set THIS up right beside the camper and you have luqurious accomidations. The best way to go in my opinion Pat

RE: Upper Peninsula?

Bond Falls - My Idea of Heaven!! No hookups and no one around! Two hearted River Campground - There will be some people there, but you're right on the mouth of the Two Hearted River where it flows into Superior! There is a suspension bridge to cross the river and walk along the beach which you'll usually have all to yourself. The stars at night are worth it alone! Those are our two Favorites that we never miss when in the UP Have fun!

RE: Is This Legal In ANY State??

We passed a large, old motorhome a few days ago pulling a big boat which had a Jeep being towed behind the boat. I wasnt fast enough to grab the camera in time, but that was a first for us. I agree with Rubin, the guy in the F-150 probably had the cruise control set up that climb....HA! HA!

RE: Ruined 3 Flying J Pumps Today

You still get the advertised Cash Price, which is usually .03 to .05 cents cheaper than the normal CC price. We always use Flying J's so we can take advantage of the dump stations and kill two birds with one stone! I wish more gas stations had this option, maybe they'd realize how many RV'ers would seek them out.

RE: In a camper during the winter...

I guess your main questions are going to be if you have shore power available or not? I frequent the Sunline Owners Forum quite often, and there is a couple on there that spent last winter in their Sunline in IL & IN. He listed a Lengthy Post about what they went through to keep their Travel Trailer comfortable in those nasty temperatures. It would be worth a look to see what you have to go through. He did have Shore Power available 99% of the time which I think is a must if you're going to be living in it for an extended period of time. I know we have boondocked in some freezing temps for a few days, and our tank heaters kill our four 6-volt batteries pretty fast. Running the heater along with the tank heaters will drain them in one day, even with full sun!! Good Luck, funny to post this in the middle of the summer while most are sitting in a lawn chair with sun screen on...LOL Pat
